At Dunhuang, we not only study the frescoes and the people and events they depict, or just look at the calligraphic works. The strokes, forms and structures of the characters in the transcripts teach us that Dunhuang represents a peak in the history of human civilization. We should make Dunhuang our starting point in refreshing our national consciousness. We should export Chinese calligraphy. Chinese students today have little time to practise calligraphy and even older people find computer to be far a more convenient writing with pen. The art of calligraphy may be lost.
