By 1944, the international anti-fascist alliance was gaining the upper hand in the war. In western Yunnan Province, Chinese forces were preparing to launch a general offensive against the Japanese. In April, Chiang Kai-shek signed the order committing the Chinese Expeditionary Force to a general counter-offensive in western Yunnan. And so, the 11th and 22nd armies under the command of General Wei Lihuang, commander of the Chinese Expeditionary Force, advanced along the Nujiang River.
